Why Choose Hinged and Swinging Casement Windows for Your Singapore Home?

Modern kitchen with black-framed casement windows allowing natural light into a sleek and minimalist interior

1) Excellent Ventilation and Natural Light

Casement windows open wide on side hinges, allowing maximum airflow into your home—perfect for Singapore’s humid climate. They also let in more natural light compared to sliding windows, which are partially blocked by overlapping panels.

2) Sealed Design for Insect Control, Better Sound Insulation, and Wind Resistance

Unlike sliding windows, casement windows close tightly with no visible gaps. This helps prevent insects from entering, improves sound insulation, and eliminates rattling during strong winds—making them ideal for high-floor or windy locations.

3) Enhanced Durability with Secure Locking Systems

Our casement windows are crafted from high-quality aluminium and fitted with stainless steel hinges or friction stays, along with durable handles for long-term reliability. For added strength and security, homeowners can opt for our Euro profile casement windows, which feature thicker frames and a multipoint locking system for superior protection and performance.

HDB Guidelines for Installing Casement Windows in Singapore

Technical drawing of a casement window with top hung panels, showing a maximum width of 700mm per window leaf
Technical drawing of a stainless steel friction stay for casement windows, showing installation outside the frame and minimum material thickness of 2.5 mm

When installing casement windows in HDB flats, it is essential to follow specific regulatory requirements to ensure safety, compliance, and long-term performance. Before any window replacement work begins, homeowners must engage a BCA-registered and HDB-licensed contractor, who will handle the HDB permit application on their behalf. Below are three key guidelines to consider:

1) Location Restrictions

Casement windows are not allowed along common corridors or in ground-floor units. This rule helps prevent obstruction in shared spaces and reduces safety risks for neighbours and pedestrians.

2) Size Specifications

HDB regulations require each casement window panel to be between 500 mm and 700 mm in width.

  • Wider panels may place too much stress on the hinges, reducing durability over time.

  • Larger openings without window grilles can also pose a fall risk, as homeowners may need to lean out to close the window fully.

3) Hardware Requirements

HDB mandates the use of stainless steel grade 304 friction stays, which offer superior rust resistance and strength.

At Ho Ho, we use:

  • Grade 304 stainless steel

  • 2.50 mm thickness

  • Friction stays that are at least half the width of the window panel

This ensures long-term durability and smooth operation.

In contrast, some suppliers may cut costs by using cheaper grade 430 friction stays at only 1.8 mm thick. While more affordable, these parts are less resistant to corrosion and significantly reduce the window’s overall lifespan and performance.

At Ho Ho, we take pride in being a trusted supplier who always puts our customers first. With over 49 years of experience in the industry, we understand that delivering high-quality products at fair prices is the key to long-term success in a competitive market. Our unwavering commitment to excellence has earned us a loyal base of repeat customers who continue to entrust us with their homes.

Where to Install Casement Windows in Your Home

1) Living Room: Maximise Light and View

Casement windows are ideal for living rooms, offering wide openings that allow abundant natural light and airflow. Their full-panel design enhances your view, making them perfect for units facing greenery or open spaces.

If you prefer an even more open view, consider our premium slide and swing windows or folding windows for a seamless, panoramic experience.

2) Kitchen: Ventilate Heat and Odours Efficiently

Casement windows in the kitchen provide maximum ventilation, helping to expel cooking heat, steam, and odours effectively. Their outward-opening design keeps your workspace clear and easy to clean, while the tight seal prevents insects from entering the area.

3) Bedroom: Enjoy Peace, Privacy, and Comfort

Casement windows offer excellent insulation against outdoor noise, making them a great choice for bedrooms. They close tightly for better sound control compared to sliding windows. You can choose frosted or tinted glass for privacy and add window grilles for added safety.
For even better noise reduction, opt for our soundproof window upgrade for a quieter, more restful space.

Some casement window configurations include a top hung window panel above the main window. This feature allows for continuous ventilation—even during rainy weather or when you're away from home. It's particularly useful for kitchens or non-air-conditioned bedrooms that require steady airflow.

However, keep in mind that adding a top hung panel will reduce the height of your main casement window, which can make the window feel shorter and limit the overall view.

If you don’t plan to use this feature often, it’s generally best to leave it out.
Note: Installing a top hung window will incur additional cost.

Casement windows can be uniquely customised to suit different architectural styles and functional needs. Below are some special variations:

1. Lattice Casement Window

2. Casement Window with Bottom Fixed Panel (Bay Window)

The second image shows a casement window with a fixed glass panel at the bottom—commonly used for bay window setups. This design allows you to enjoy extended views while keeping the lower section static for safety and structure.

3. Picture Casement Window

The third window setup combines a large fixed centre panel (picture window) with side casement panels that can open. This design maximises natural light and views while still allowing for airflow through the smaller casement openings.

4. Semi-Circle Casement Window

The last image features a semi-circular (arched) casement window, adding a soft architectural focal point. Often used in bathrooms or stairwells, it balances privacy and design elegance—especially when paired with frosted glass.

Casement Windows, Hinged Windows, or Swinging Windows – What’s the Difference?

You may come across terms like casement window, hinged window, and swinging window being used interchangeably. In fact, they all refer to the same type of window—a window that opens like a door.

What’s the technical term?

The correct technical term is casement window. These windows are attached to the frame by hinges or friction stays, and they swing open either outward or sometimes inward like a door.

What do homeowners usually call it?

In everyday language, many homeowners refer to them as hinged windows or swinging windows because of the way they operate. These are casual terms based on their movement, but functionally, they’re all casement windows.

So whether you're looking for swinging, hinged, or casement windows, you're looking at the same window design—and we’ve got the right options for every home.

Casement Window FAQ: Common Questions Answered

  • What can I do to enhance the security of my wooden main door?
To enhance the security of your wooden main door, consider the following upgrades: Install a High-Quality Lockset – Use a heavy-duty deadbolt lock or a digital lock with advanced security features. Ensure it meets industry standards for strength and durability Use a Solid Core Door – Choose a solid timber core door, which is more resistant to forced entry than hollow-core or low-density doors. Add a Peephole or Digital Door Viewer – This allows you to see who’s outside before opening the door. Install a Security Bar or Door Chain – These add another layer of protection and prevent the door from being opened fully by force. Consider a Smart Doorbell or Surveillance Camera – Pair your door with a smart camera system so you can monitor and record any suspicious activity. Ensure Proper Fit and Alignment – A misaligned door can compromise security. Make sure your door closes snugly and has no gaps that could be pried open. With these enhancements, you can significantly improve the overall security and peace of mind your wooden main door provides.
  • What types of laminate door colours should I get for my doors?
    1. Woodgrain Tones (Oak, Walnut, Teak) – Ideal for creating a warm and natural ambiance – Pairs beautifully with Scandinavian, Muji, and rustic interior styles 2. Solid Neutral Colours (White, Black, Grey, Beige) – Perfect for a modern and minimalist look – White and beige brighten up the space and create a clean, airy feel – Black and grey add depth, contrast, and sophistication
  • Is it advisable to use a laminate door for the main entrance?
Laminated doors are a popular choice due to their perfect scratch resistance, modern appearance, and low maintenance—they do not require painting or varnishing. However, they are not suitable for main entrances exposed to direct sunlight or rain. Prolonged exposure to UV rays or moisture can cause the laminate surface to discolour permanently, and unlike varnished doors, the colour cannot be restored. In contrast, varnish doors may also discolour over time, but they can be revarnished to look as good as new. If your main door is sheltered from the elements, a laminate door with a solid timber core can still be a practical and stylish option. For exposed areas, a varnish or solid wood door is a more durable and restorable choice.
  • How much does it cost to replace an HDB main door in Singapore?
The cost of replacing a wooden HDB main door in Singapore depends on factors like the type of finish, door size, and any additional accessories. At Ho Ho, we offer direct factory pricing with no hidden charges, making quality more accessible for homeowners. Our solid laminated main doors start from $599, and the price includes: – Removal of your existing door – Professional installation – Quality lockset – Stainless steel magnetic door stopper – 1-year warranty for peace of mind
  • What is the cost of replacing a bedroom door in Singapore?
The cost of replacing a bedroom door in Singapore can vary depending on the door’s finish, size, and included accessories. At Ho Ho, we offer transparent, factory-direct pricing with no hidden fees. Our eco core laminated bedroom doors start from just $250 each, and the price includes: – Dismantling of the old door – Professional installation – A quality knob lockset – Stainless steel magnetic door stopper – 1-year warranty for added assurance
  • What is the lead time and process for getting a wooden door?
After the onsite measurement, non fire-rated doors are typically installed within 2 weeks. For fire-rated doors, the lead time may extend up to 3 weeks due to the requirement to apply for an HDB permit. Installation takes about 1 hour per door. For laminated doors, the entire process is completed within the same day. However, for varnish or painted doors, the finishing work will be done on the following day to allow sufficient drying time.
  • How do I maintain, repair, and clean my wooden door to ensure its longevity?
To keep your wooden door looking great and functioning well over the years, follow these care tips: Cleaning Regular Dusting: Use a soft, dry cloth to remove surface dust. Gentle Wiping: For deeper cleaning, use a slightly damp cloth or mild soap solution. Avoid soaking the door or using abrasive cleaners. Avoid Harsh Chemicals: Steer clear of strong chemicals or bleach, as they can damage the finish and surface of the door. Maintenance Lubricate Hinges: Apply a small amount of lubricant (like WD-40) to the hinges if the door starts to squeak. Check for Moisture Damage: Especially for doors in humid or wet areas, inspect the bottom edges and corners regularly for swelling or warping. Inspect the Lockset: Tighten any loose screws and ensure the handle and lock mechanism are functioning smoothly. Minor Repairs Scratches & Scuffs: Light scratches can often be buffed out with wood polish or a furniture touch-up marker that matches your door colour. Surface Touch-Ups: For varnish doors, revarnishing can restore the original shine. For laminate doors, scratches may not be repairable and may require panel replacement if severe.
