Folding Window vs Casement Window: Which Should You Choose for Your Singapore Home?

If you've been Googling window types at 11pm while your renovation contractor WhatsApps you asking for a decision "by tomorrow morning" — you're not alone.
Choosing between a folding window and a casement window is one of the most common questions we get at Ho Ho, and honestly, it deserves a proper answer. Not a generic one copied from some overseas website that has never seen the inside of a Singapore HDB flat.
So let's settle this once and for all.
WHAT ARE THE TWO GLASS WINDOWS WE ARE COMPARING?
A folding window — also called a slide and fold window, bifold window, or bifolding window — has multiple panels that slide along a track and fold neatly to one side like an accordion. When fully opened, the entire window frame is clear. No bars, no panels in the way, just fresh air and an unobstructed view.
At Ho Ho, we offer four models: Gen 1 (most affordable, from $399 per panel), Gen 2 (slimmer stack profile), Gen 3 (flush lock, (slimmer stack profile), and the Magic Folding Window (our flagship — 6.38 mm laminated glass, 1.5 mm aluminium profiles, PSB Singapore certified for water tightness and wind load). All models are HDB-approved and come with a 2-year warranty.
A casement window is the hinged window most of us grew up with — it swings open on side hinges like a door. One handle, one panel, simple to operate. In Singapore, many people also call it a swinging window or hinged window.
At Ho Ho, we offer three casement window profiles:

Standard HDB Casement Window — suitable for window heights up to 1.2 m, cost-effective for standard openings ($18 per sqft)
Prime Casement Window (our best seller) — suitable for heights up to 1.5 m, 15% heavier than standard, stainless steel connector inside the frame instead of plastic, more durable latch system ($24 per sqft)
Euro Profile Casement Window — for heights up to 1.8 m, 50% heavier than standard, multipoint locking handle, premium build for larger openings ($50 per sqft)
Most homeowners replacing their HDB windows end up choosing the Prime Casement Window — it hits the sweet spot between durability and price, and it's the reason so many of our customers refer their friends and family to us.
Both window types are HDB-approved and widely used across Singapore. But they are built for very different needs. Here is how they compare across eight key factors.
1. VIEW — FOLDING WINDOW WINS (AND IT'S NOT CLOSE)
Open a casement window and you get ventilation — but the middle bar of the frame is still there, partially blocking your sightline no matter how wide you open it.
Open a folding window fully and the panels stack neatly to one side. The entire window frame becomes a clear, unobstructed opening. Whether you're looking at a park, a city skyline, or your neighbour's very enthusiastic plant collection, nothing gets in the way.
This is why folding windows are so popular for living rooms and balconies in Singapore. Homeowners tell us they didn't realise how much they were missing until they replaced their old windows and finally saw the view they'd been paying condo prices for.
The bigger the window, the bigger the wow factor.
Verdict: Folding window wins. If your view matters to you, this is your answer.
2. VENTILATION — FOLDING WINDOW WINS
Singapore is hot. This is not a controversial statement.
A casement window opens to roughly 90 degrees, letting in a solid amount of air — especially when positioned to catch the breeze. It genuinely works well.
But a folding window opens the entire width of the window frame. The airflow isn't just good — it's maximum. This kind of natural ventilation can meaningfully reduce how often you reach for the aircon remote, which helps your electricity bill and, frankly, your health. Spending extended periods in air-conditioning — especially as we get older — takes a toll. A well-ventilated home just feels different.
For kitchens and service yards where cooking smells, steam, and laundry moisture build up fast, the folding window's full opening makes a real, noticeable difference.
Verdict: Folding window wins. More opening = more air. Simple physics.
3. NOISE REDUCTION — FOLDING WINDOW WINS
When it comes to sealing and noise reduction, folding windows actually have an edge over standard casement windows. The folding window's rubber seal runs along the full frame when closed, giving it solid noise-blocking performance straight out of the box.
Want even better noise reduction? We offer a double glazed upgrade for our folding windows at an additional $200 per panel, replacing the standard glass with 18 mm double glazed glass for noticeably improved sound insulation. It's a popular upgrade for homeowners in units facing main roads, MRT lines, or busy void decks.
The one exception: if you go all the way up to a double glazed Euro Profile Casement Window, it will outperform a standard folding window on noise. But for most homeowners comparing like-for-like, the folding window holds its own.
Verdict: Folding window wins for standard models. Double glazed folding window takes it further. Double glazed Euro Casement is the top performer for extreme noise situations.
4. EASE OF OPERATION — CASEMENT WINDOW WINS
No drama here. A casement window has one handle. One hand. Turn it, push it open. Your ah ma can do it without any tutorial, on day one, without wearing her reading glasses.
Folding windows are a two-hand operation — one hand on the handle to close the panels properly, and the other to lock them in place. It becomes second nature quickly, but it is a learning curve. And if a sudden Singapore downpour catches you off guard, closing a 6-panel folding window requires a bit more urgency than snapping a casement panel shut.
Verdict: Casement window wins on simplicity. One hand. No learning required. Ah ma approved.
5. SAFETY — FOLDING WINDOW HAS THE EDGE
If you have young children, elderly family members, or windows without grilles, this section matters.
HDB regulations cap casement panel width at 500–700 mm, partly because larger openings without grilles create a lean-out risk when closing. Our Prime Casement Window addresses this with a 4-screw handle system — more secure than the standard 2-screw — and is less likely to loosen over time. We also offer a lockable handle with key for an additional $15 per handle, which is excellent for homes with curious toddlers.
All our folding windows come with a built-in lock, you just have to lock it when you have young children at home. You do not need to install a separate window grille, which keeps your view clean and saves on cost.
Verdict: Folding window wins for grille-free homes and households with young children or elderly residents. Casement with a keyed handle is a solid and more affordable runner-up.
6. MAINTENANCE — CASEMENT WINDOW WINS
A Prime Casement Window has friction stay hinges, a handle, and a frame. Wipe it down, lubricate the hinges with WD-40 every 6 to 12 months, tighten any loose screws if needed — done. There is not much that can go wrong.
Folding windows have a deeper track that collects dust and debris over time, which can cause stiffness if left unattended. A good clean once a year keeps things running smoothly, and the rollers benefit from a light lubrication every six months. Our team walks every customer through this during installation — it is genuinely not complicated — but it is more than what a casement window needs.
Verdict: Casement window wins. No deep track to clean, fewer moving parts, less to think about.
7. PRICE — CASEMENT WINDOW WINS
Casement windows are significantly more affordable than folding windows. The mechanism is simpler and installation is faster, which keeps costs lower.
For reference, using a typical HDB living room window of around 32 sqft:
Standard HDB Casement Window: $18 per sqft → around $576 installed
Prime Casement Window (best seller): $24 per sqft → around $768 installed
Euro Profile Casement Window: $50 per sqft → around $1,600 installed
For folding windows, a typical living room has 4 panels. At our 50th Anniversary promotion pricing:
Gen 1 Folding Window: $399 per panel → $1,596 for 4 panels (U.P. $2,320)
If budget is your main priority, the Prime Casement Window delivers excellent quality at a price that's hard to beat. If you're investing in a home you plan to stay in for many years, the folding window's daily improvement in view and airflow is worth the difference for most homeowners.
Verdict: Casement window wins on price. The Prime Casement Window in particular offers exceptional value.
SO WHICH GLASS WINDOWS SHOULD YOU CHOOSE?
Choose a Folding Window if:
You want a completely unobstructed view from your living room or balcony — the bigger the window, the bigger the wow factor
You want maximum natural ventilation and to reduce reliance on aircon
You want to skip the window grille without compromising on safety
You are investing in a home you plan to live in for the long term
Choose a Casement Window (Prime recommended) if:
You want a reliable, low-maintenance window at a very competitive price
You prefer one-hand operation — simple, familiar, and foolproof
Budget is a priority and you do not want to compromise on quality
Your window is in a bedroom where you are mostly on aircon anyway
Not sure which room gets which? Here is what most of our customers do: folding windows in the living room and kitchen, where the view and ventilation payoff is biggest — and Prime Casement Windows in the bedrooms, where most Singapore homeowners keep the aircon on and rarely open the window fully anyway. The living room is where you spend time with family and entertain guests. That is where the wow factor matters most.
Your home, your call. But that combination is a good place to start.
