What Is a Casement Window?

A casement window is a window panel attached to the frame by side hinges, allowing it to swing open inward or outward like a door. It is commonly operated using a handle, latch, or friction stay for smooth opening and secure closing.

Many homeowners may not be familiar with the term casement window. In Singapore, it is more commonly known as a swinging window or hinged window because the window opens by swinging on its hinges.

Why Casement Windows Are Popular in Singapore

Modern kitchen with black-framed casement windows allowing natural light into a sleek and minimalist interior

1) Excellent Ventilation and Natural Light

Casement windows open wide on side hinges, allowing maximum airflow into your home—perfect for Singapore’s humid climate. They also let in more natural light compared to sliding windows, which are partially blocked by overlapping panels.

2) Sealed Design for Insect Control, Better Sound Insulation, and Wind Resistance

Unlike sliding windows, casement windows close tightly with no visible gaps. This helps prevent insects from entering, improves sound insulation, and eliminates rattling during strong winds—making them ideal for high-floor or windy locations.

3) Enhanced Durability with Secure Locking Systems

Our casement windows are crafted from high-quality aluminium and fitted with stainless steel hinges or friction stays, along with durable handles for long-term reliability. For added strength and security, homeowners can opt for our Euro profile casement windows, which feature thicker frames and a multipoint locking system for superior protection and performance.

Types of Casement Windows We Offer In Singapore

Choosing the right casement window profile is important for durability, smooth operation, and suitability for your window size. Different profiles are designed for different opening heights and performance needs.

At Ho Ho, we offer three common casement window profile options: Standard HDB Window Profile, Prime Casement Window, and Euro Casement Window.

Standard HDB Casement Window Profile

The Standard HDB Window Profile is the common option used in many HDB flats and is suitable for normal-size window openings.

Best for casement window height within 1.2m

For window heights above 1.2m, it is recommended to add a top hung window above for better support and practicality.

Benefits Of Standard HDB Casement Window:

  • Cost-effective option

  • Suitable for standard HDB requirements

  • Reliable for normal daily use

Prime Casement Window Profile

The Prime Casement Window is a stronger upgraded profile designed for taller windows and better durability.

Best for Casement Window height within 1.5m

Key Advantages Of Prime Casement Window:

  • 15% heavier than standard HDB casement window

  • More durable latch system

  • Stainless steel connector inside the frame, better than plastic connector used in standard HDB profile

Euro Casement Window Profile

The Euro Casement Window is the premium heavy-duty option for larger and taller windows. It offers stronger construction and improved sealing performance.

Best for Casement Window height within 1.8m

Key Advantages Of Euro Profile Casement Window:

  • 50% heavier than standard HDB casement window

  • More durable latch system

  • Stainless steel connector inside the frame

  • Multi-point locking handle for better sealing and tighter closure

Aluminum Casement Window Design & Style In Singapore

lattice casement window

When homeowners in Singapore talk about casement window design and style, they are often referring to the lattice pattern on the glass panels. Lattice casement windows create a timeless, elegant look and are especially popular in landed homes, condos, and selected HDB renovations.

Unlike plain glass casement windows, lattice designs add character and make the window look more decorative from both inside and outside the home.

Popular Lattice Casement Window Designs

The 6 panel lattice design is one of the most popular choices in Singapore. It offers a balanced and symmetrical appearance without looking too crowded.

The 8 panel lattice design is another top choice for larger windows. It gives a premium, heritage-inspired look and works well for wide openings.

In Singapore, 4 panel lattice designs are less commonly chosen. One reason is cultural preference, as the number 4 sounds similar to the word associated with death in Chinese. Because of this, many homeowners prefer 6 or 8 panel layouts instead.

Is Lattice Casement Window Suitable With Window Grille?

Lattice casement windows already have visible lines across the glass. If you also install a window grille, the overall look can become too busy or cluttered.

Things to Consider Before Choosing Lattice Windows

Higher Cost

Lattice casement windows usually cost more than plain casement windows because of the extra fabrication work and detailing.

More Cleaning Needed

More bars and sections mean more surfaces to wipe and maintain. Dust can collect around the lattice lines, so cleaning takes longer compared to plain glass windows.

Less Popular Than Plain Minimalist Designs

Many newer homes in Singapore now prefer slim frame and plain glass designs for a cleaner modern look. Lattice windows remain popular mainly for homeowners who prefer a classic style.

HDB Casement Windows Guideline in Singapore

Technical drawing of a casement window with top hung panels, showing a maximum width of 700mm per window leaf
Technical drawing of a stainless steel friction stay for casement windows, showing installation outside the frame and minimum material thickness of 2.5 mm

When installing casement windows in HDB flats, it is essential to follow specific regulatory requirements to ensure safety, compliance, and long-term performance. Before any window replacement work begins, homeowners must engage a BCA-registered and HDB-licensed contractor, who will handle the HDB permit application on their behalf. Below are three key guidelines to consider:

1) Casement Window Location Restrictions In HDB

Casement windows are not allowed along common corridors or in ground-floor units. This rule helps prevent obstruction in shared spaces and reduces safety risks for neighbours and pedestrians.

2) HDB Casement Window Size Specifications

HDB regulations require each casement window panel to be between 500 mm and 700 mm in width.

  • Wider panels may place too much stress on the hinges, reducing durability over time.

  • Larger openings without window grilles can also pose a fall risk, as homeowners may need to lean out to close the window fully.

3) HDB Casement Window Hardware Requirements

HDB mandates the use of stainless steel grade 304 friction stays, which offer superior rust resistance and strength.

At Ho Ho, we use:

  • Grade 304 stainless steel

  • 2.50 mm thickness

  • Friction stays that are at least half the width of the window panel

This ensures long-term durability and smooth operation.

In contrast, some suppliers may cut costs by using cheaper grade 430 friction stays at only 1.8 mm thick. While more affordable, these parts are less resistant to corrosion and significantly reduce the window’s overall lifespan and performance.

At Ho Ho, we take pride in being a trusted supplier who always puts our customers first. With over 50 years of experience in the industry, we understand that delivering high-quality products at fair prices is the key to long-term success in a competitive market. Our unwavering commitment to excellence has earned us a loyal base of repeat customers who continue to entrust us with their homes.

Casement Window With Top Hung

4 panel casement window with 4 top hung installed in Singapore HDB Flat by Ho Ho

Some casement window configurations include a top hung window panel above the main window. This feature allows for continuous ventilation—even during rainy weather or when you're away from home. It's particularly useful for kitchens or non-air-conditioned bedrooms that require steady airflow.

However, keep in mind that adding a top hung panel will reduce the height of your main casement window, which can make the window feel shorter and limit the overall view.

If you don’t plan to use this feature often, it’s generally best to leave it out.

There are different configuration of the top hung you can consider for different purpose.

Note: Including top hung for your casement window will incur additional cost.

Picture Window

Picture Window With Side Casement Window In Singapore

A picture window, also known as a fixed panel window, is a window that does not open. At first glance, some homeowners may wonder why anyone would choose one. The answer lies in the unique benefits it offers.

While a picture window cannot provide ventilation, its fixed design creates other advantages. Because there are no moving parts or opening panels, it can be made in larger sizes with slimmer framing and no middle bar. This allows more natural light to enter the home and gives you a wider, unobstructed view of the outdoors.

Another key benefit is practicality. Picture windows are ideal for areas where ventilation is not necessary, or where the window is positioned too high to reach comfortably. In these cases, a fixed panel window becomes the perfect solution — bringing in daylight, enhancing the sense of space, and creating a modern architectural feature without the need for operation.

If you love the wide, unobstructed view of a picture window but still want natural ventilation, you can combine it with casement windows for the best of both worlds.

A fixed panel picture window can be placed in the centre to maximise light and views, while casement windows are installed at the sides to allow fresh air to flow into the room when opened. This combination is a popular choice for homeowners who want both functionality and modern design.

HDB 3/4 Height Window & HDB Full Height Window

HDB 3/4 height window, bottom fixed panel top casement window in Singapore

A casement window with a fixed panel below is commonly known as a 3/4 height window or full height window. Replacing the entire window set can be costly, and for HDB homes, permit approval may also take additional time.

The good news is that you do not always need to change the whole set of window. In many cases, you can keep the existing bottom fixed panel and replace only the top portion with a new casement window at a more affordable price. This allows you to refresh the look and improve functionality while keeping costs lower.

If you would like the original bottom frame colour to match the new window, we can also spray-paint the fixed panel frame for you at an additional cost, giving the entire window a cleaner and more uniform appearance.

Casement windows can be uniquely customised to suit different architectural styles and functional needs. Below are some special variations:

1. Curved Glass Window

A curved glass window creates a striking feature that transforms any space into something truly special. Its sweeping design follows the shape of the wall, allowing wider panoramic views, more natural light, and a brighter open feel.

Unlike standard flat windows, a curved window adds architectural character and makes the room feel more spacious and elegant. When combined with operable casement panels, it also provides excellent ventilation and practical everyday use.

2. Casement Window with Bottom Fixed Panel (Bay Window)

A casement window with a fixed glass panel at the bottom, a design commonly used for bay window setups. This style allows you to enjoy wider and more extended views, while the lower fixed section remains static for added safety, strength, and structural support. It is a practical choice for homeowners who want both functionality and a clean modern look.

3. Semi-Circle Casement Window

A semi-circular (arched) casement window adds a soft architectural focal point to any space. Its curved design creates a more elegant and distinctive look compared to standard rectangular windows. Commonly used in bathrooms, stairwells, or feature walls, it offers a balance of privacy and style—especially when paired with frosted glass.

4. Triangle Casement Window

A triangle casement window adds a unique architectural feature to your home. Its distinctive triangular top creates a striking design statement while allowing more natural light to enter the room, making the space feel brighter and more open.

The casement panels below can be opened for ventilation, giving you both style and functionality in one design. Popular for landed homes, staircases or attic rooms,  this window style is ideal for homeowners who want something modern, elegant, and different from standard window designs.

Casement Window Handle

Casement Window Handle Comparision In Singapore

A casement window handle is an important component that controls the opening, closing, and locking of your window. If the handle becomes loose, broken, or difficult to turn, replacement may be needed to restore smooth and safe operation.

At Ho Ho, we offer improved handle options for our own customers using stronger and more reliable designs.

Why Our Default Casement Window Handle Is Better

Many companies still use the standard 2-screw handle. Over time, this type may loosen more easily with regular use.

Our default replacement handle uses a 4-screw fixing system, giving better support and a more secure installation.

Benefits of 4-screw casement window handle:

  • Stronger fixing to the frame

  • Less chance of loosening

  • Better long-term durability
